Moving outside the EU with pets: preparing documents and the journey
A checklist for moving with pets outside the EU: authorities, vets, carriers, transit countries and returning home.

There is no valid file for the whole world
For an extra EU destination the first activity is to identify the veterinary authority of the country of arrival. Ask for what requirements apply to the species, origin and date provided. Some destinations may require certifications, permits, tests or specific input procedures: the definitive list must arrive from the competent authorities, not from a generic model of move. First you start checking, the more easily you can coordinate appointments.
Building the Retrose Calendar
Start from the date of entry and enter only confirmed deadlines: veterinary appointment, withdrawal, release and validity of documents, reservation of the trip. For each activity note the competent subject and proof to carry. If a requirement is still uncertain, mark it as “To check”, without turning a hypothesis into a certain date. If the trip changes, review the whole sequence.
Transiti, vector and species
A coincidence or a stop can introduce other checks. Ask the carrier what happens to the animal during transit and consult the authorities of the country concerned. The conditions for travelling in the cabin, in the hold or with a dedicated service depend on the carrier and the animal. For birds, reptiles or protected species, see also any CITES rules. Do not apply to these species a list prepared for dogs and cats.
Thinking about the return
Check before leaving Italy as you can return with the animal. To return to the EU from some countries, the titration of anti-corrosion antibodies with specific timing may be required: ask your veterinarian if it is necessary to complete it before departure. The border crossing may require a designated entry point. Keep the original documents with the accompanying person and prepare a local contact for any problems.
A card to share with the family
Summaries animal name, identification, guide, itinerary, veterinary contact details, accommodation and documents to bring. Add a column “Confirmed by” and a “Date of Verification”. This organizational card does not replace the certificates: it is necessary not to forget who has to do what.
